THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]
(b) There are no authoritative figures on the number of undocumented Indian immigrants in the US.
(c) GOI remains engaged with the US Government on all issues that concern the safety, security and well-being of Indian nationals in the US. Government of India has accorded top priority to ensuring a safe, orderly, legal and humane migration process. GOI does
not encourage illegal migration of Indian citizens into other countries.
(d) & (e) From time to time, Indian Embassy and Consulates in the US, upon the request of the US authorities, facilitate repatriation of undocumented Indian immigrants after their nationality verification. Since 2014, 579 undocumented Indian nationals have
been issued travel documents to enable their safe return to India.
The Government has sensitized the State Governments to inform the returnees about the resettlement programmes and financial support schemes. The responsibility of resettlement of the returnees primarily rests with the State Governments. Government of India
stands ready to work closely with the State Governments in this regard. The State Governments have been asked to avail/utilize various schemes of the Central Government in this context.
