TRI-LATERAL HIGHWAY

2741. SHRI RAM MOHAN NAIDU KINJARAPU:

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) the progress of the Tri-lateral highway between India-Myanmar- Thailand;

(b) whether work has started on replacing world war era bridges from the Indian side and if so, the details thereof;

(c) the time by which the highway is likely to open for cross border traffic;

(d) whether there have been deliberations regarding standardisation of licences and other technical arrangements necessary for the smooth functioning of the trans-border highway; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
[GEN. (DR) V. K. SINGH (RETD)]

(a) Government of India is implementing two projects as part of Trilateral Highway between India, Myanmar and Thailand. These are Construction of 69 bridges on the Tamu-Kyigone-Kalewa section and Upgradation of 120.74 km road on the Kalewa-Yargi section in Myanmar. Work has been awarded in October/December 2017 through open tendering.

(b) Work on new structures to replace the World War era bridges is scheduled to commence in January 2018.

(c) Construction work is scheduled to be completed in 36 months.

(d) & (e) India, Myanmar and Thailand are negotiating a Motor Vehicles Agreement for facilitating movement of vehicles across their borders. Myanmar has conveyed that it would proceed with this Agreement once it has comprehensively reviewed the implementation of similar arrangements it has with other countries.
