Visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade of Jamaica to India (October 09-12, 2017)

Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, is currently on an official visit to India from 9-12 October 2017. This is the first ever visit by a Foreign Minister of Jamaica to India.

The visit coincided with the holding of the 5th Foreign Office Consultations between the two countries, which was held on 10th October, 2017. For the FOC, the Indian delegation was led by Secretary (East) Ms Preeti Saran and the Jamaican delegation by Ambassador Marcia Gilbert Roberts, Permanent Secretary.

Senator Smith had a meeting with External Affairs Minister, Smt Sushma Swaraj, in New Delhi on 10 October. The two Ministers held discussions various aspects of bilateral ties as well as important regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. The two Ministers focused on building closer cooperation in the areas of trade & investment, health & health tourism, capacity building, agriculture, culture, tourism etc. The two countries are currently finalizing MoUs on Health and Sports.

Senator Smith expressed gratitude for the donation of US$1,50,000/- worth of medicines to Jamaica. She also expressed the region's gratitude for India's contribution of US$ 2,00,000 for the countries worst affected by the recent hurricanes.

Senator Smith held meetings with Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism Shri K.J. Alphons and Hon'ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare Shri J.P. Nadda in New Delhi. An interaction with FICCI also took place in New Delhi.

Senator Smith will be visiting Mumbai from 11-12 October where she will be meeting leading Indian IT companies and the business community.
