Centre for Migration, Mobility and Diaspora Studies, ICWA

The Centre for Migration, Mobility and Diaspora Studies (CMMDS) at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) has come into effect on 1 August 2022 pursuant to decision of the Government of India to merge the erstwhile India Centre for Migration (ICM) under the Ministry of External Affairs with the ICWA. ICWA is India's oldest foreign policy think-tank founded in 1943. It is an autonomous body governed by the Indian Council of World Affairs Act of 2001. It holds the status of an institution of national importance.

CMMDS is the migration vertical of ICWA on matters related to international migration, mobility, and diaspora studies. It aims to promote safe and orderly mobility of Indian nationals for skills and talent overseas through research on migration trends, labour market assessments, and pre-departure orientation. It undertakes policy-oriented research on migration and worker mobility, and also works towards documenting and sharing best practices. CMMDS adopts a multi-pronged approach through research publications, in-house panel and book discussion and student-mobility workshop including in collaboration with academic institutions, State Governments, and international organisations.

CMMDS functions under the mandate of ICWA and works closely with the Ministry of External Affairs, international organisations, and academic institutions to advance research and dialogue on migration and mobility. It is the implementing partner for MEA-mandated projects in collaboration with ILO India and ICMPD under the India-EU Common Agenda on Migration and Mobility (CAMM Phase II), and with IOM India on Project PRAYAS (Promoting Regular and Assisted Migration for Youth and Skilled Professionals).
