Foreign Secretary addresses SCO Heads of Government Summit in Tashkent

- Foreign Secretary, Smt Sujatha Singh, led the Indian delegation to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of Government Council in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 29 November. Addressing the Council, Smt Singh emphasized the role of the SCO in promoting
rapid economic development and connectivity in the region, as also in countering terrorism and promoting peace. She called for a greater SCO role in the rebuilding and reconstruction of Afghanistan
- On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, the Foreign Secretary held bilateral meetings with Mr Murad Askarov, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan; Mr Mohammadrezo Nematzade, the Trade, Mines and Industry Minister of Uzbekistan; Mr Mohammad Karim Khalili,
the Second Vice-President of Afghanistan and Mr Dmitry Mezentsev, the Secretary General of the SCO.
- India has been an observer country in the SCO since 2005. The six-member organization now plans to expand its membership.
