At the invitation of President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, H.E. Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives will pay an official visit to India from March 27 to April 1, 2005. He will be accompanied by Madam Nasreena M.A. Gayoom, First Lady of
the Republic of Maldives.
During the visit, President Gayoom will meet President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh and Raksha Mantri Pranab Mukherjee. His discussions with Indian leaders are likely to cover bilateral matters
as well as issues of regional and international importance to the two countries.
President Gayoom will be visiting Chennai and Trivandrum besides Delhi, where he will be meeting members of the Maldivian community residing in those cities.
India and Maldives enjoy close and cordial relations. India has played an active and constructive role in the field of public health and human resources development in Maldives. India's prompt and effective assistance to Maldives during the recent Tsunami disaster
was highly appreciated by the Government and people of Maldives. The present high-level visit would serve to further strengthen the friendly and cooperative ties that exist between the two countries.
President Gayoom last visited India in August 2000.
