RESOLUTION IN EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AGAINST CITIZENSHIP (AMENDMENT) ACT

Will the Minister of EXTERNAL AFFAIRS be pleased to state:

(a) whether the European Parliament discussed the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 passed in India and threatened to pass resolution on the issue;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the steps taken by Government to give clarifications to the Members of European Parliament on the issue and whether any assurance was given that Indian Government would not be discriminatory to the religious minorities in India ; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

a) & (b) Yes, the European Parliament held a debate on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019 on 29 January 2020 where about fifteen Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed their views. A Joint Motion for a Resolution on the matter was submitted to the European Parliament. However, the European Parliament decided to postpone voting on the Resolution.

(c) & (d) The Government of India has engaged with the Members of European Parliament to convey its position on the Act, including by the External Affairs Minister in Brussels on 17 February 2020.
